Doulas Care Crisis Fund
DONA International’s Doulas Care Crisis Fund was started in September 2001, in response to the September 11 attacks in the United States. At that time DONA International immediately pledged $1,000 to the New York Metropolitan Doula Group. Any pregnant woman who lost a partner in this tragedy, or whose partner was serving on the search and rescue team was able to request a doula at no charge for the next nine months. The funds were to be used to defray the expenses for volunteer doulas who were caring for these women.
From the beginning it was determined that any monies left over from this initial project to help women from September 11th, would be retained for the event of future crises. Therefore monies from the Doulas Care Crisis Fund will continue to be available to birth and postpartum doulas who offer their services to families in need, due to a sudden crisis in the family. The DONA International Board of Directors has defined "crisis" as a case of terminal or life-threatening illness, death, a catastrophe, or natural disaster. The doula donates services to the family in the crisis situation free of charge. The fund will cover the doula's directly related costs, such as childcare, meals, parking, cab fare, etc. Depending on availability and committee decision, monies from the fund may also be given to a doula who has met a crisis in her own life. The intended recipient in this situation must be a birth or postpartum doula, a member of DONA International, or recommended by a member of DONA International. Donations continue to be contributed to this important fund.
