PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP A

Observing and Interpreting Newborn Behavior: Using Behavioral Observations as the Basis for Postpartum Parent Support and Guidance
Thursday, July 19, 2007 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
(Registration begins at 7:30 am)

DONA International is excited to offer this fantastic opportunity for experienced DONA certified doulas and other qualified, experienced professionals to learn specialized skills for helping parents and their baby discover one another.

This one day program will provide participants with the theoretical foundations for the use of newborn behavioral observations (NBO; Nugent, Keefer, O’Brien, Johnson, Blanchard, 2005) as the basis for providing information to parents on their infant and as a way of sensitizing them to the competencies of their newborn in order to foster the parent-infant bond from the very beginning. Participants will be exposed to the behavioral competencies and the repertoire of the full-term infant and they will learn to observe and interpret the behavior of the infant, in terms of the infant’s current developmental agenda. The session will examine the use of behavioral observations as a central ingredient in anticipatory guidance and demonstrate how this can be done in the context of the professional-parent relationship.

Prerequisites
Experienced DONA certified doula or other parent/infant care professional. Participants must have supported a minimum of 20 families, having spent at least one hour of one-on-one time with each family specifically devoted to helping new parents explore their unclothed newborn (for a minimum of 20 hours total). As part of the registration process, please also send Jacqueline Kelleher a letter describing your experience with new families.

Objectives

  • Describe the theories and concepts underlying the NBO system
  • Discuss the theories behind the development of the parent-infant relationship in the newborn period
  • Demonstrate how to use the NBO to make behavioral observations of newborn behavior and newborn behavioral patterns
  • Discuss how to interpret these observations from a developmental point-of-view and how to communicate them to parents as a form of guidance
  • Describe how the NBO is used as an educational and relationship-building tool with parents
