My Name is Amelia Garcia, I am a descendant of the Apache and Mayan tribes and have been a community doula for over 10 years and Doula Coordinator for our program South Phoenix Healthy Start (SPHS) for the past three years. As a community doula and coordinator, I understand how important it is that our birthing population have support while giving birth. Our program recognizes that to improve perinatal outcomes and reduce disparities in infant and maternal mortality, holistic interventions aimed at improving women’s health throughout her reproductive life span—before, during and between pregnancies is paramount. I started my DONA certification process in 2012 received my certification in November of 2014 and have been DONA certified ever since! While on this journey I have come to realize that the DONA name is recognized internationally and bringing the birthing community together is my passion. I received my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Interdisciplinary studies in Public Communications in 2014 and continue for my Masters from Northern Arizona University.
