Finding a Birth or Postpartum Doula Trainer –
What You Should Know

All trainers listed are approved and in good standing with DONA International.

To be DONA-approved, each trainer is an active DONA certified doula, and has completed extensive prerequisites, a trainer workshop, and curriculum evaluation and approval. For more information on the approval process see Birth Doula Trainer Requirements and Postpartum Doula Trainer Requirements.

All trainers are independent – not employees of, or paid by, DONA International. Each trainer (or her designate or sponsor) handles the workshop registration.

DONA International-Approved Birth and Postpartum Workshops
All DONA-approved birth doula workshops provide a minimum of 16 hours of instruction. All DONA-approved postpartum doula workshops are a minimum of 27 hours. Some workshops are longer to allow for additional topics or exercises related to doula work. For a listing of currently scheduled workshops visit Find a Workshop.

Each trainer sets her own fees and refund policies. The cost of a workshop reflects what is included in the workshop, such as the number of hours, meals, lodging, materials, etc. Some trainers offer fee reductions and/or scholarships.

An Introduction to Childbirth for Doulas workshop may be offered prior to a birth doula workshop. This Intro fulfills the childbirth education requirement for birth doula certification.

A Breastfeeding Course may be offered prior to a birth or postpartum doula workshop, which fulfills the breastfeeding requirement for certification.

If you did not find a trainer near you, try contacting the trainer in the nearest city or town and ask how far they might be willing to travel. Or, you can contact trainers in any State, Province or region as some trainers do travel outside of their own areas.
